Online expense management software brings Ollie down to earth13 April, 2019 5:29 am
Ollie had tipped back his chair and lifted his feet onto the corner of his desk as he basked in the warm glow of his own ego.
Having just closed the deal with a major client he felt himself owed a moment of self-satisfaction before he completed all the paperwork, which he’d started by filling in his expense claim using online expense management software.
Bill looked up from processing the claim, and wondered aloud: “Did your salary drop into the bank on time this month?”
The question didn’t disturb Ollie’s reverie. “I should think so,” he said from behind half-closed eyes. “Haven’t looked.”
“And will you earn commission from this mega-deal you’ve just done?”
“Then why are you fiddling your expenses?”
Ollie swung his feet onto the floor, and sat up with a start. “What do you mean?” he demanded.
Bill looked over the top of his computer screen. Somehow it made the look a tiny bit sinister. “You’ve claimed for a journey a little more than twice the actual distance you drove, Ollie. Not to put too fine a point on it, that’s stealing, and I’d say you should be ashamed of yourself.”
Ollie protested. “But everyone does it. It’s kind of ‘normal’,” he said.
“Just because ‘everyone’ does it doesn’t make it remotely acceptable ,” said Bill. “If ‘everyone’ went around stealing old ladies’ purses, would that be acceptable or normal? I don’t think so. And nor do you.”
He went on: “If that kind of theft is allowed to become acceptable, who knows what else will become acceptable, but just as wrong.”
Ollie changed tack. “Anyway, how can you tell how far I drove?”
“The technology doesn’t lie,” said Bill. “Solo Expenses allows me to calculate precisely how far someone’s driven between two points, and works out the accurate – and honest – claim with that information. That’s just one of the reasons it’s so successful in making companies more efficient. There are others, but we don’t need to talk about those right now; it would only cloud the water.”
“So what are you going to do now,” Ollie wanted to know.
“I’m going to bin this expenses claim, and you’re going to do another, Mr Hot Shot Salesman – but an honest one this time. And I hope it’ll be a lesson to you that if you’re on the take you’ll get found out, because nothing slips past Solo Expenses…”
